When North Korea And The Sex Pistols Collide

Like a lot of people who are fascinated by vertically challenged dictators, I am totally obsessed with North Korea. The closest I’ve ever gotten was inside a tunnel at the DMZ, and that may be as far as I will ever get. The knocks against me are threefold: I’m a U.S. citizen, a journalist and a South Korean native. I’ve been told by both South Korean and American officials that short of a U.S. fighter jet air-dropping me over Pyongyang in a big box marked “FOOD,” I ain’t getting in.

Pouring salt on the wound is a 14-part series from Vice magazine — yes, that Vice magazine — on North Korea. Bearded Vice hipster Shane Smith ran into many a bureaucratic wall trying to make it in, but make it in he does. It’s a tragicomic look at the weirdest place on earth set to a kicking soundtrack, natch. Plus, none of the froufrou hyperbole that typically schlocks up most U.S. news reports on Kim Jung-il’s lil’ hood. Bonus.
