I Went To The D.C. Gun Show!

Like most effete Northeasterners, guns scare the crap out of me. I have always wanted to go to a shooting range, though, and the prospect of going to the National Gun Show on Saturday was too good to pass up.

Virginia, as we all know from former Sen. George Allen, is the real world. Indeedy it is. I should preface all this by saying I’m pretty neutral on Second Amendment issues, though I do believe the Supreme Court’s expected decision overturning D.C.’s outdated possession laws is constitutionally the right one. And while I am sympathetic with big-city mayors like Adrien Fenty and Michael Bloomberg in their fight for stricter gun controls, I am more sympathetic toward the gun lobby’s argument that the problem isn’t weapons, it’s the people who use them. That sounds simplistic to the point of childish, but unless government figures out a way to disarm the gangs of, say, Columbia Heights, I don’t see why nonviolent citizens shouldn’t be allowed to own guns for their protection.

Of course, there should be limits there, too. Like, someone please explain to me why any civilian needs a weapon like this:

Seriously, what is that? And why does anyone who isn’t in the military need it???

Can We Stop Snickering About EscortGate Now?

Twelve U.S. soldiers have been killed over the past three days, with the latest casualties occurring today when three were killed in a roadside bomb attack in Diyala province, AP reports. That puts the death count to date at 3,987, per AP, which indicates that barring something spectacular, the next time Iraq will lead the news is when we hit the psychologically meaningful but not actually significant total of 4,000 dead since the March 2003 invasion.

I don’t get why Iraq has fallen off the front pages. I mean, I get why, what with the presidential contests taking up all the oxygen. But I scratch my head nonetheless.

As for EscortGate, I find it funny that Washington is trying to share ownership of this story, simply because one of the alleged assignations occurred here at the Mayflower Hotel. It doesn’t take much for the nerds in this town to get all atwitter about sex.  I mean, remember Washingtonienne? It was like: Hey everyone, the suits who work on the Hill enjoy having sex with women half their age and way lower on the pay scale! For real? You don’t say!

I’m not saying that I’m too busy sipping cognac and watching Frontline to be at all captivated by this stuff. For god’s sake, I coined PenisMouthGate. What’s that? You don’t recall that one? Let me refresh your memory.

Props to George Allen for trying to spread the embarrassment in 2006.  Hope he’s enjoying his life, which won’t ever include becoming president. Seriously. All the best.
