So here are pics from The Europes, at long last. The welcome mat for SoojieBear and me you see above was mere feet? meters? feet? from our hotel in Budapest. A lovely, lovely city, BTW.

More pictorial fun after the jump.

This week we contend with the return of “appeasers” to the national debate, wonder aloud if President Bush has actually done Barack Obama a favor, and give props to John McCain for navigating a treacherous political environment for the GOP.

Listen to this week’s roundtable here.

City Of Brotherly Love Has Lots For Both Obama, Hillary

I’m back from a weekend in the Greatest City on Earth, which was overwhelmingly for the Kerry/Edwards ticket in 2004 and seems hell-bent on not being disappointed again this year. Pennsylvania may have been a battleground in the past, but if current political trends continue, it will be a very deep blue come November.

The Inky/Daily News’ Pa. Votes blog reports today that in the week of March 24th alone, a whopping 42,867 new voters registered, of which 33,281 registered Democratic. Moreover, 45,977 registered voters switched over to the Democratic party. Those are stunning numbers, but if you know Pennsylvania at all, not tremendously surprising.

Pennsylvania may be the most prominent example of a Bush conversion state — one that was moderately conservative in the past but is now so anti-George W. Bush that we can expect it to be reliably Democratic for some years to come. In that way, President Bush may be as great a gift to the Democratic party as Barack Obama is believed to be. The proof of that will come when you see an inordinate number of Bush soundbites and images during the general election campaign, even though he’s exiting the national political stage next January.

Photos and more after the jump. Continue reading City Of Brotherly Love Has Lots For Both Obama, Hillary…

John McCainAfter jaunting off to the Middle East/Europe on a little-noticed trip to bolster his foreign policy cred, John McCain is acceding to the political reality that all most voters want to hear about now is the economy. He delivered what was billed as a big-deal address on the economy — his first since the downturn — but if voters were looking for clues as to how he would specifically address the housing/credit crisis, they didn’t get many.

That’s because McCain himself admitted that he doesn’t have answers yet. The address was designed to assure supporters that he isn’t solely obsessed with Iraq, and that he’s actually paying attention to the economy. As pocketbook issues overtake pretty much everything else among voter concerns, his trip abroad last week couldn’t have been timed worse.

Speaking in Santa Ana, Calif., McCain acknowledged that the current fiscal crisis is leaving “many Americans feeling both concerned and angry.”

“The motivation and behaviors that caused the current crisis are not terribly complicated, even though the alphabet soup of financial crises are terribly complex,” McCain said, in what was a recurring theme of the address.  Continue reading McCain Delivers Economic Speech. Sort Of….

George W. Bush’s Presidency, In Song

I can’t tell if this is funny or sad or what.

That’s President Bush serenading the crowd at the Gridiron Club spring dinner — one of those annual press corps-politician love-ins this town gets so goofy about. I enjoy watching Bush do his self-deprecating shtick as much as anyone else. Can’t lie: I find his impishness to be charming on most occasions. Obviously, Bush’s exit is time for us all to look back on his fun-filled tenure, which, whatever your opinion of him, was never, ever boring. Continue reading George W. Bush’s Presidency, In Song…
